Opened November 17, 1981, designed by George and Tom Fazio.
Later redesigned by Jack Nicklaus, whose work produced the Bear Trap stretch (holes 15–17) widely cited as one of the toughest three-hole runs in professional golf. Sources do not agree on the exact year of the Nicklaus redesign, so no year is stated here.
Hosted the 1983 Ryder Cup and the 1987 PGA Championship (won by Larry Nelson), plus the Senior PGA Championship every year from 1982 to 2000.
Has hosted a PGA Tour event every year since 2007 — branded the Honda Classic through 2022, and the Cognizant Classic from 2023 onward.
